Source Foods is a cafe and deli that know what they are doing. Everything about the ambience, the menu, the coffee, displays a real love and knowledge of food. One of the most popular breakfast/brunch spots along Beaufort Street, it is located at the City end of Beaufort on the junction of Brisbane Street.

Stylishly decorated, the cafe has a long list of juices and smoothies, the odd special, some beautiful looking cakes and bagels in the cold cabinet, and informative tasting notes on the house blend coffee and available single origins.

The menu sources the best local produce and includes items such as breakfast burger, coconut and passion fruit pannacotta with stone fruits, feta and spring onion scrampled eggs, nasi goreng, vegan feast (chick pea & black bean falafel, smoked field mushrooms, charred asparagus, butternut hummus, smooth avocado, rocket, vegan feta & smashed hazelnuts), pan fried brussel sprouts with broad beans, cress, pesto, artichoke and confit tomato, and they seem to cater for all dietary needs while still keeping the food interesting and appetising.

My companion said that his coffee was in the top three that he has tasted in the world. High praise indeed considering that the number one coffee is in Chicago (Ipsento, in case you are interested on N Western Avenue).20171105_091623

I ordered a monkey business style protein smoothie with banana, almond milk, peanut butter and protein powder. They even double checked the type of protein powder that I wanted in case of allergies ! It tasted beautifully smooth, not powdery at all, and not sickly like some peanut butter smoothies can be. Yummy indeed.

For breakfast my companion chose the pulled pork quesadilla with chipotle beans, cheddar, rocket, chilli mayo and onion jam. It was a lunch special, but they very accommodatingly allowed it as a breakfast item. The last mouthful was as good as the first and everything about it was beautifully prepared and delicious.

I chose the miso hot-smoked salmon, with roasted kipfler potato, chorizo, torched eggplant hummus, asparagus, herbs & soft fried egg. Again a wonderfully constructed dish where nothing on the plate was out of place. Also a nicely sized portion. The torched eggplant hummus was smoky and delicious, and the salmon was plentiful, good quality and very very tasty.

It took all of our strength not to have something to takeaway from the cold cabinet afterwards – it all looked so appealing.

It was a wonderful meal, and we were serenaded by 80’s music, which had us tapping our feet. Source is definitely a favourite with the locals and now looks like it is a new favourite with us. A big thumbs up and a nicely full belly.

Pablo, New Farm

Pablo is a nice trendy little cafe in Brunswick Street, New Farm just by the junction of Merthyr Road. There is a selection of tables inside and out, and the vibe is quirky – it’s a little cramped in places, but that’s all part of the charm.

Every dish is cooked fresh to order and the place was packed so we were advised by the waitress that we may have a wait on our hands. She was right, we waited around 20 minutes, but it was okay because our expectations had been met and we could see the quality of plates emerging from the kitchen.

Persuaded by the board outside which said ‘Number one hot cakes in Brisbane’, I chose the ricotta hot cakes with lemon curd ice cream, berry compote, cacao nibs, and coconut crumb.

The plate was a work of art, garnished with flowers, and the hot cakes did not disappoint. They were light and fluffy and not overly sweet with enough natural sweetness coming from the fruits. the ice cream was smooth, tangy and creamy – a lovely complement to the dish.

My companion chose the breakfast chilli.

The chilli was made from slow cooked beef cheek, speck bacon, red beans and chorizo – it was rich, tasty and nicely spiced. The corn bread had a smear of honey which added a hint of sweetness, the egg was superbly oozy, and the guacamole and salsa a nice smooth contrast to the substance of the chilli.

We also chose some drinks – I had freshly squeezed orange juice and my companion had a large flat white which was nicely smooth and well rounded, the only criticism was that the coffee could have been a bit hotter in temperature.

Pablo is a real neighbourhood gem, and somewhere that I will come back to. It’s easy to see why the locals love this cafe – it has a menu that makes you want to taste every option and the food definitely delivers. Well worth the wait for delicious, fresh, inspired dishes.

Kinky Lizard – East Perth

Kinky Lizard Espresso Bar Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

I had passed Kinky Lizard several times before when going to The Royal in East Perth, but I hadn’t eaten there until last Saturday when I decided to pop in for brunch. Wow what a lovely meal – I will certainly be returning.

The cafe has an alfresco area and tables inside as well. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable.

The coffees were excellent, full flavoured, rich and tasty with no bitterness.

My companion had a full breakfast :

The wholemeal toast was made from a quality loaf of bread, not made soggy by the poached eggs (so many cafes do not drain their poached eggs properly). The eggs were perfectly cooked with a nice soft yolk. There was plenty of bacon, nice chorizos, flavoursome mushrooms and sweet tomatoes. One of the yummiest brekkies in a long while.

I chose bacon rosti :

This was served with fresh tasty avocado, sweet tomatoes, rocket, and a poached egg with hollandaise. A lovely combination of beautiful ingredients which I thoroughly enjoyed.

This is a fairly short review because I didn’t go to this cafe expecting to write a review, however it was such a lovely meal that I couldn’t let the experience pass by without recommending it.

I will definitely be venturing to East Perth again for a walk by the river and brunch at Kinky Lizard.
