Wow what a lovely restaurant this is. You have to know about it though, it’s not the kind of place that you will stumble upon by walking past, it is tucked away at the end of an arcade off Kearns Crescent in Applecross.
We were offered a $45 set menu where the choices were a starter, a main of either 36 Pork, Beef Short rib, Gaya bulgogi or seafood stew and a dessert of either green tea ice cream or red misu. You can also choose a la carte, but it is better value to choose the set menu.
We were served with an amuse bouche which consisted of a rice pancake – absolutely delicious.
For starter I chose Gaya chicken which was thigh meat battered and served with a sweet and sour sauce. This dish was lovely, the chicken tender and succulent.
My companion chose the Jap Chae – a dish made form potato noodles, beef and vegetables – again a very nice, satisfying dish.
For the main course I chose a seafood stew. The broth was full of flavour, and it contained squid, scallops, fish and prawns, all perfectly cooked. The dish was served with crispy sticky rice and a side dish of kim chi, fish cake and tomatoes.
My companion chose 36 Pork which is pork belly that has been cooked for 36 hours. This was served with apple, sweet potato, chives and red onion on a spicy chilli bean sauce. The pork was very tasty and every element worked well. The side dish trio of kim chi, fish cake and tomatoes was also served with the pork.
For dessert I chose the red misu. This was served in a pot with layers of cream, chocolate and crumbled biscuit. It was heaven and I can’t wait to have it again.
My companion chose the green tea ice cream, which was full of green tea flavour, creamy and delicious.
So will I go back to The Gaya ? Absolutely yes, and I thoroughly recommend it. The staff are pleasant, the food is delicious, and the dishes are an interesting Korean fusion twist. Ten out of ten for The Gaya.
